Left school at 14, and straight to work. No messing. Farm work, I didn’t like it, but had to do it – you had to do six months at at a time. Oh Aye, that was gruelling. I’ve had some damn good jobs. Worked in the Steel works. What did I do there? Everything! I drove a – truck – really!
You had it rough but I was very fortunate, I had a good husband. I met him in the Steel Works and we got married when I was 22. He had a trade and then when I had the children – a boy and a girl – he went in the Merchant Navy. He did very well; he served his time as an engineer.
This is part of Gladys’ story, going back to the early 1940s. Gladys is 92.
