Something that really sticks in my mind, when we were coming home from school in the 1980s – the birds, starlings. There would be thousands, the sky would be black with them. There would be bird mess all over but you would see them coming over like a great big cloud. You would know then, that it was night time and you would know it was time to start getting yourself home.
Every day, every single day throughout the winter – they’d come and settle in the trees at Ramsden Square. You don’t see them any more, not a single one. I think it’s because of the seagulls, they frighten them off.
