Those Dresses!

I just loved going to the Public Hall. That’s when the dates came in. Boys wore jackets like blazers and grey or fawn trousers, and ties. Smart.

dresses in the 1950sOur skirts were stiff, the stiff plastic that used to go through underskirts, or lots of netting and things. I didn’t have a lot of clothes, nothing like I have now. There were girls who had more, probably because their parents could afford more, but we had enough.

My mother made an awful lot. Occasionally, my sister, and this is what I do remember, my sister went to college and started teaching and with her first pay packet she brought me a dress, and it had oranges and lemons on it – and that was for me to go to a dance with.
